A wide range of specialised equipment had to be used to move the new 70 ton galvanizing bath for leading galvanizing company, Durban Galvanizing. With challenging offload requirements, limited height, as well as rigging over existing equipment, the Lovemore Bros Heavy Rigging team successfully completed the challenging lift.

As one of the leaders in the galavanzing industry, the Durban galvanizing plant dips 600 tons of steel on average per month and boasts a 48 – 72 hour turnaround time. “We have been in the industry for over 25 years and proudly have a great reputation in the industry,” says Roy Ramadu, Production Director for Durban Galvanizing.

The hydraulic gantry was set up in order to do the lift and to remove the old bath and replace it with the new 70 ton bath.

“The set up itself was challenging, as we had to set up the hydraulic gantry in a tight space and bring in the two 10 ton gantry header beams into the plant to be able to do the lifts,” says Avikar Chabalalsing, Rigging Supervisor for Lovemore Bros.

With limited access and driveway space, the Lovemore Bros 6 axle Goldhofer trailers with its automatic hydraulic rear steer capabilities, was used to bring in the new 70 ton galvanizing bath into the plant. “The Goldhofer has a remote manual control which allowed us to negotiate the tight concerns to be able to offload the bath in the plant,” says Avikar. The hydraulic gantry then rigged the bath off the trailer into place.  Both the rigging of the old galvanizing bath and new bath were done while lifting over existing water baths.

“The Lovemore Bros teams were brilliant. We were very happy with the way the job was carried out, even with the challenging time constraints.” says Roy Ramadu
